Weather report
Christmas is coming, but what season is it
anyway?
Roses, geraniums, azaleas, and bougainvillea are
all blooming. Camellias and cherry blossoms are just beginning to open. The
eucalyptus and palm trees are still green. On the other hand, the cypress trees
have lost their leaves, and plate-sized teak leaves clatter to the pavement.
Some trees I can’t identify have turned a wishy-washy yellow, not unlike
Washington, DC’s pathetic show at autumn
color.
On Tuesdays and Thursdays, when we
board the bus to the campus at 7:30 in the morning, the sun has still not risen
above the mountains. It’s not pitch black, but it seems way too dark to be
going to work.
On sunny days, the
temperature range is huge. At night, the temperature plunges into the low 40s
and at 6:15 in the morning, our apartment is so cold that I can barely stand to
do yoga in bare feet. By afternoon, I’m peeling off my long underwear
because it’s in the 60s, and with the sun shining directly on me, it feels
even warmer.
I’m not exactly sure
what season this feels like, but it doesn’t resemble my American Decembers
at all.
