Abduction!
This week the police were hanging big red and white
banners in our local market.
Since I was with Zhou Xueying, I didn't have to
stand and slowly decipher the message myself. "It's warning about the abduction
of children," she told me. "It has been a problem. They give the children
something to make them fall asleep and then carry them away. Sometimes the child
is even 12 years old."
"What do they do
with the children afterwards?" I asked. "Do they ask for ransom or kill
them?"
"Oh, they don't do that. They sell
them."
"Who would buy a child? Why don't
they just adopt them?" Not three blocks away from these banners is an orphanage
after all.
"It is not easy to adopt a
boy."
That says it all. Chinese
orphanages are crowded with girls while boys are being abducted and
sold.
