News censorship
We are quick to assume that news is censored in
China, but often fail to consider that the same thing may be true of American
media.
Last week, CCTV, the Chinese government's TV
network, reported that US forces had narrowed down the exact location of Osama
Bin Laden to a 16-square kilometer area and were closing in on him. We thought
this was exciting news and were pretty surprised that there was not even a hint
of it in American news the next morning. It had been reported in British news,
however.
On Saturday night (February 28),
the regular news program was interrupted with an announcement that Osama Bin
Laden had been captured. John immediately checked the internet--nothing except a
report in the Iranian news.
The next
night, CCTV reported that they have been unable to confirm reports of the
capture, presumably because it would have to be the US that confirmed it.
Personally, John & I believe Osama has been nabbed and the US is delaying
the announcement. It is a pretty sad situation when China is more willing to
report news than the United States!
