Black Like Me

People in China think our skin is fascinatingly white, but compared to them, our values and behavior are much more Black.

We are often told that our body language is so expressive, our manner much more direct. We can dress more extravagantly, listen to wild music, and talk loudly. It's not clear to me whether we are admired for this, but at the very least, we are forgiven.

When we don't fit into the mainstream culture, by accident or design, nobody gets too upset. We are foreigners, outsiders; we're assumed to be different. No one imagines that we could be just like them. And for all their fascination, I don't think many people want to be just like us.
