Another way to be wrong

I'm learning to write Chinese, but I still have a lot to learn about what to say.

For homework, our teacher asks us to write sentences using our new Chinese vocabulary. I wrote a sentence using the word for 'getting change'. My teacher marked my the sentence as wrong, because, she said, it didn't make any sense. She asked me to explain to her (in English) what I was trying to say.

The sentence wasn't complicated. Essentially, I wrote something like "How much change will I be getting?" When I explained the intended meaning to my teacher, she looked surprised. "If that's what you want to say, then the sentence is correct. But nobody would ever say that. If the person you a buying from thinks that you don't know the right amount of change, you will be cheated."

So, even when I speak Chinese correctly, I am still an idiot.
