There is a new director of the Foreign Languages
Department, and people tell us she is "modern". But you can't take words at face
value here; modern is not what you think it is.
For example, I have always thought that it is good
to be 'open minded'. When people described me that way, I was initially
flattered. Then I heard some students talking about Brittany Spears losing her
virginity with a boy, and soon after, dumping him. How did they explain what is,
in their eyes, sluttish behavior? "She's very open minded."
So what are the characteristics of our new "modern" director? It's not as bad as you think; I don't believe she is sleeping around. But I do know that she changes her clothes every day, and each time she puts on a completely matching outfit, right down to the handbag and wristwatch. It is also likely that every day, she washes her hair.
I hope China doesn't go 'modern' too fast; I was just getting used to the old ways.
