Cleaning up
The Chinese may have invented paper and gunpowder,
but they never got around to making rakes.
We had a big rainstorm over the weekend, the first
rain in almost four weeks, and the force of the storm caused a lot of trees to
drop their dry leaves. Early this morning, in the grey light of dawn, armies of
men were already out clearing the fallen leaves from the ground.
While pine needles are swept up with a
handmade rush broom, leaves are picked up one by one using oversized tweezers,
manipulated like giant chopsticks. Using a rake would probably seem as odd to
them as eating rice with a fork.
