Happy Birthday!
A Chinese birthday cake looks a lot like an
American cake, but don't let that fool you.
Today is Deb's birthday, and for the party tonight,
her friends bought her a cake. The decorations are extremely delicate and
elegant, handmade out of frosting and subtly colored. It's worth explaining that
the little pink creature below, the one that looks like something out of Dr.
Seuss, is really a monkey (in recognition of her birth-year Chinese horoscope
animal) and the flowers behind it are lilies (which are her favorite
flower.)
The big surprise comes when you eat the
cake. It's not very sweet, which isn't necessarily bad, and it's a little too
rubbery, which isn't especially good. The biggest disappointment is the
frosting. That too, is not sweet, and because butter plays no role in the
creation of a cake in China, the rich coating has the feel of whipped
Crisco.To make matters worse, Chinese
people don't even
like
birthday cake, so we have a lot of leftovers. Anyone out there interested in a
bite?
