Yin and Yang
I have just started studying Chinese at our school,
in an immersion class taught by Teacher Zhang and Teacher Yang.
There are only four students in the class, me and
three exchange students from Vietnam. Although both teachers speak English, I am
the only student who understands it, so the classes are taught almost
exclusively in Chinese.
So far (one class
from each) Teacher Zhang is unflaggingly cheerful, even in the face of our
unforgivable incompetence. On the first day, we were supposed to repeat simple
expressions, and we failed miserably. But with each mistake, Teacher Zhang said
reassuringly - "Mei guan xi" - Don't worry about
it.
Teacher Yang's lesson, on the other
hand, was filled with "Bu dui le!" - Wrong! which she unleashed every time our
thick tongues mangled a tone. She nailed the boy next to me so ruthlessly that I
thought he was going to break down in
tears.
Their names are Teacher Zhang and
Teacher Yang, but their teaching styles are so different I have come to think of
them as Teacher Yin and Teacher Yang.
