Captured!
This has been the number one topic of conversation
today. We got the news at 7:30 AM on the bus to school, exactly 12 hours after
he was arrested on Hainan island, more than 1000 kilometers
away. For the first time since we've been
here, I see people everywhere reading newspapers. The tabloids are covered with
splashy full color photo montages of Ma and the men who captured him. When I
tried to get a copy of the paper as a souvenir (about all I could read of the
news was his name) every newsstand was sold out.
Finally, late in the afternoon, I began
to see students clumped together reading papers, walking down from the gate of
the university. I tracked back in the opposite direction towards the source, and
began to hear a recorded announcement coming from a hand-held bull horn. I
didn't understand all the words, but "Ma Jiajue" was prominent among
them. There at the school bus stop, two
men crouched on the pavement assembling newspaper sections and selling them as
fast as they could. For one kuai, I got an assortment of three papers, each with
its own treatment of the story.I'm still
trying to figure out what exactly happened, but in the meantime, I'm enjoying
the graphics.
