Daybreak
Early in the morning, when it is barely light, we
often wake up to the distant sound of crackling explosions.
This is the wedding season in Kunming, and it is
customary to celebrate a marriage by setting off strings of firecrackers. It
occurs to me that this is probably what I am hearing. Also, on my way to school
one morning, I crossed paths with a funeral procession, and they were lighting
off firecrackers too. Fireworks are commonly used in
celebrations.
But I can't forget that,
not far from here, to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Communist Party,
local officials executed 50 drug dealers. So, early in the morning, when it is
barely light, I often worry about what I'm hearing.
