Late 2006 Events

by John Devlin

We had two very enjoyable and well attended, year-end functions in November and December 2006.
On the evening of Tuesday 28 November, members of the Branch gathered at the Dalhousie University Club at a dinner for Dr Nancy Lane OBE, Fellow of Girton and Director of the University Cell Biology Institute. Dr Lane was visiting her native city of Halifax, Nova Scotia on the occasion of her induction into the Nova Scotia, Science and Technology Hall of Fame. We first met in the Club Pub downstairs for drinks to meet and chat with Nancy informally, before dinner in the main hall. After the College Grace, eloquently delivered by Dr Leslie Jaeger, we enjoyed a roast lamb dinner followed by Nova Scotia Blueberry Grunt. After dinner, Dr Ron Leslie (Trinity Hall, 1972) gave some introductory remarks. He was Nancy's first Ph.D. student at Cambridge and filled us in on details of her remarkable career. Nancy's captivating after dinner talk gave us a very interesting and sometimes quite candid view of Cambridge, the role of women in science, and where the University is headed. This was followed by an informal and lively question and answer period. An extremely enjoyable evening and we are most grateful to Dr Lane for having taken time from her busy schedule to meet with us. We also took the opportunity to give her an Honour Membership of the Branch.

Our popular Annual Christmas lunch took place on Saturday 9 December, held again at the historic Halifax Club. This year the weather was dry and sunny, and we were able to find nearby parking spaces without undue difficulty, unlike last year when we had to contend with snow drifts and ice. The Club atmosphere was warm and welcoming in the Pryor Room where we gathered for drinks beforehand, round a log-burning fire. Some 30 Members and Guests sat down for lunch in the elegant Morrow Room upstairs. Some of us dined upon pork and others on fish and we all agreed that the food was excellent with a good selection of wines. A nice prelude to the busy Christmas season and Cambridge Society 'friend-raising' at its best - a very jolly event.
