I’ve
been an illustrator on both coasts (and in between) and it feels like I’ve
illustrated everything but the kitchen sink.
No,
wait -– I’ve done several kitchen scenes …
I began in Royal Oak,
Michigan
and studied at the College for Creative
Studies in Detroit.
Then it was off to several small towns in Oregon.
But it was my dream to hit the big time, New York City,
before I was 30.
I
made it by one day.
While in New York
I did illustrations for books, toys, puzzles, stationary, calendars,
magazines and even a couple of billboards. l used to
say I loved doing the jobs that Mary Englebright
"turned down" and making my husband and daughter pose for reference
(sometimes I just made them pose for laughs. Please don’t tell them).
In
2004, now long-since living in Reston, Virginia, I walked into a bakery that had a
sign in the window that said they looking for a cookie decorator. They didn't
know what they wanted and I had no experience. It could have been a recipe
for disaster but it turned out to be a marriage made in heaven.
It
didn’t take me long to realize that dreaming up my own designs and custom
decorating cookies and cakes was what I wanted to do. So I traded in my
gouache and my New York City agent for royal icing and a million Wilton tips,
got some nice press attention and, after a
year and a half in someone else's salt mine, decided to go out on my own.
Please check out my original designs
for all occasions and call or write with questions about ordering!
