Toys for your iSight
  • A company called Kaidan have announced an accessory kit for the iSight, consisting of a tripod mount and lens adaptor ring, that could be used for fitting a wide-angle lens for example.

  • Using the iSight with a PowerBook, or just need a shorter Firewire cable? The Zip Linq is a retractable Firewire cable that is as long or as short as you need it to be. I've not tried this particular one with the iSight, but it should work (I use a USB version of the cable for other purposes). Warning: The Firewire cable provided with iSight has a slim-profile connector to fit inside the small plastic clip-together mount. Other cables may be larger, and require alteration in order to fit...

  •
  • SiteFlex is a very smart looking iSight stand. I'm tempted. Amazon have a more generic webcam stand called the FlexStand from Strange Solutions Inc which clamps onto your desk.

  • Build your own iSight mount for an Apple Cinema Display using $2 of parts from Home Depot!

  •
  • SightLight From Griffin Technology
If you are looking to improve your image, lighting is important. This lighting system attaches to the iSight, and looks great.

  • SFBags / Waterfield have a nice little soft pouch for carrying your camera and keeping the pieces together.

Video conferencing without a computer

If you want to set up a home  video conferencing solution that doesn't tie up your computer, try the D-Link i2Eye. It's a video camera in a box that connects to your broadband modem via Ethernet. It uses your television set as a display. Two units will cost you under $500.

If you don't have broadband, the Vialta BM80 Beamer, is a camera and LCD screen combination that looks like a cool picture frame, and plugs directly into a standard phone socket. Again, two will cost under $500. The quality will be a lot lower than iChat and if you call long distance, you'll pay long distance phone charges because it's not using the internet.
