iSight iMac G5 Mounting Confusion

Where to stick it?

If you are lucky enough to have one of the new G5 based iMac computers, you might be wondering where to put your iSight mount. No-one really wants to use the self-adhesive pads if they can help it, but none of the existing iSight mounts are designed with the new iMac in mind.

Now, as you may know, the iSight was recently revised and if you buy the latest model - which has a serial number ending in /B - you'll find that the camera is the same, but the mounts include a special magnetic white plastic cylinder. This is designed to stick to the top of the new Apple cinema displays. It also makes sense that this mount works with the new iMacs (and it does), but this hasn't stopped many more cautious people from being wary of waving magnets around their new computer.

For example, see these discussion threads:

* iSight with new iMac
* Will iSight fit on new iMac?
* Where to mount iSight on new iMac?

Also, staff in the Apple Stores don't seem to know about this mounting themselves, at least the ones I've asked.

Now, my personal view is that there is a steel strip in the upper part of the G5 iMac casing specifically for this mount, and I won't hesitate to use it. It takes a strong magnet to screw up disk drives. In fact, I just need to visit the Apple store and get myself a new iSight (I gave my /A version to my iChat buddy, as the camera they were using wasn't the best - it was an iBot, and always produced a rather blurry image). If you already have an iSight, you can get an iSight accessory pack for $30 that includes the new mounting. Once I get it, I'll post a picture of it working.
