Getting around Athens - 05/20/04
It's not to bad but does take a little getting
use to. Not all signs are in English and about 50% of the transportation folks
speak English but besides that it's not
bad.
Buses are clean and seem to be
everywhere. They cost 45 cents Euro a ride. You can get weekly and monthly
passes. I don't know how much they
are.
Trains are as nice as buses but
there are only a few lines. If I remember right they are 70 cents Euro. There
are also passes for a week and a
month.
Taxis are almost a forget it
issue. If you look American they will not stop for you. Our second night here
me, Scott and an Aussie from switching stood by the street for an hour. I'll bet
15 to 20 cabs pulled up to us and then darted away. It's not impossible, just
tough. Of course you could always have one called. Make sure you ask for a cab
that will give a receipt. Otherwise you might get the receptionist's friend and
ripped off. Best of luck if you try the cab
thing.
I'm hoping by Games time they
simplify the whole transit system.
