Game most due for an update
Friends of the C64 will remember Auto Duel. This was the first open architecture game I ever played, years before it's time.
In Auto Duel you got a car and 2000 bucks. You could either work
as a courier making runs between cities for cash, raise money in the
arena, or go it as a bandit. Money went to updating your car which was
a balance between weight and speed. The heavier your car the more
weaponry you could carry but the slower you were.
How would this game translate today?
1. Money would matter again. Too often in driving games the upgrading
is a mindless matter of buying the next car on the list or buying the
"pro" transmission. Auto Duel made you upgrade in order to suit the
style of game you wanted to play.
2. Driving would matter again. Why not apply the conventions we have
created in racing games to a game with a deaper story.
3. Skills would matter again. Auto Duel was HARD. If you headded out there without skills and a good car you'd get slaughtered.
I'm calling for a blend of
GTA (open architecture)
Mechwarrior (upgrade structure not limited - a tree not a pole )
Driver (driving skills matter)
and the movie Mad Max.
This is the sort of game that a next gen system would really take
advantage of. There would be challenges that you could try at any time
but would be suiside without a good vehicle. The game would not be
based in humour like GTA, and the look of the game would be important.
There will be no cut scenes.
