Greetings from Joel and Sara Mullen! We can’t believe that we will be leaving for Italy tomorrow! With our return to Italy, we are bringing back the “Sicilian Sketches” newsletter. We hope you enjoy this short update on our move to Sicily.

News Tidbits

1. We will arrive in Catania, Italy on Tuesday, August 7, and our target date to move to Palermo is September 1. By the end of August, we hope to have located an apartment in Palermo!

2. We send a huge thank you to each church and each family that hosted us during deputation over the last 4 months. It was our privilege to be with you and to share the story of God’s faithfulness in our lives.

3. Our new address and phone # for the month of August is:
Via Lucchese Palli, 26
95100 Catania, Italy
Phone: (39) 095.360212

4. Catania is located on the slopes of Mt. Etna, Europe’s largest active volcano. In the last few weeks the volcano has experienced it’s largest eruption in many decades. Currently, there is no serious threat to the city of Catania. However, the rain of volcanic ash has forced the Catania airport to close at least until Monday (tomorrow). If it’s still closed on Tuesday, we may be diverted to a different airport in Sicily and have to travel to Catania by land.

5. Our first term in Italy will be 2 years, and our assignment includes church planting, theological education, and NYI (youth) ministry.

Prayer Requests

Thank you to everyone who has agreed to pray for us and for this ministry in Italy. It is amazing to realize that your prayers are supporting us each step of the way.

1. Pray for safe travel and for our crates to arrive safely in Catania.

2. Pray that God will enable us to communicate easily and naturally in the Italian language.

3. Pray for young people in Italy to be called by God into ministry.

4. Pray for our search for a place to live and minister in the city of Palermo and for open doors as we begin to meet people and build relationships there.

5. Pray for Rob and Jane Kazee (Nazarene missionaries), Tim and Danielle Whetstone (Nazarenes in Volunteer Service), and Jason and Donna Martin (Mennonite missionaries) who are all in the process of applying for Italian visas.

Miscellaneous Notes

1. We will return to the U.S. on our first furlough from May 1–July 31, 2003.

2. Please feel free to share this newsletter with friends, family, your pastor, and your church!

3. Email us anytime if someone you know would like to receive our email newsletters.

4. If you would prefer not to receive our email newsletters, please let us know as well.

5. Remember to pray for us every time you eat pizza or pasta!!!

We appreciate your prayers and support more than we know how to express. We pray that God’s grace would sustain you and strengthen you as you continue to serve him.
