We had a wonderful, but short, trip to Japan, and we want to share our pictures with you.
It may seem to you as if there are too many pictures here, but, believe me, this is only a
sampling of the four hundred or so that Joel and Amy took with our new digital camera.
We were very lucky on this trip. The dates of the trip were determined by Joel's conference and
Anne's spring break, but those dates coincided exactly with the peak of the cherry blossom season
this year. The weather was perfect every day we were there. And we had the pleasure of meeting
two of Amy's friends.
Anne noticed some drastic changes in Japan since her last visit, which was in 1967. First, the
people have grown. In 1967 we felt extremely tall in Japan as we looked over the heads of most people.
In 2002 we felt tall only in gatherings of senior citizens. The young people are much taller than
they were then. Second, the cars have become larger, much shinier, and much more
orderly than they were in 1967. Third, there were signs everywhere that we could read -- subway and
train signs, street signs, business names, and advertisements. In 1967 we were almost totally
illiterate. Oh, and one more thing -- we saw people standing around everywhere doing their e-mail
on their cell phones. Nobody had even thought of that in 1967!
The extremely polite and helpful Japanese people who interacted with us all along our way made this
an especially enjoyable trip. We hope you'll enjoy our pictues.
