Can't remember which of Shakespeare's sonnets a quote came from? This is the site for you. A superb and comprehensive literary resource, Bartleby serves up many works of reference, literature, and poetry in a searchable interface.

• The Onion
The finest satire known to humanity, the humour is so deadpan that numerous journalists around the world have taken their wacky stories at face value. I remember Martin Henry frothing at the mouth in the Daily Gleaner about the satanic Harry Potter series, and the devil-worshipping slut who created him. Why was he so certain that J. K. Rowling was a satanist bent on corrupting children? She had gloated about it during an "interview with a reputable publication". His source? You guessed it.

If you want to know what Americans were talking about on any given date, check out this collection of jokes from the popular late night talk shows. Apart from the shriekingly funny one-liners, this archive of bada-bings from Leno, Letterman et al serves as an excellent snapshot of the topic du jour.

Containing links to a treasure trove of information, the IMDb is the premier site for movie lovers who want to know everything about the production details of any film, including cast and crew biographies, links to other films they've made etc. Word to the wise: ignore the user comments; most of the people who post to this site are desperately in need of a clue.

• Rotten Tomatoes
This is the place to find out what critics think about movies. The site carries links to reviews by many critics, and films are ranked "Fresh" or "Rotten" depending on the prevailing opinion. Apart from the convenience of finding out whether films are worth seeing, reviews of movies rated "Rotten" are some of the funniest pieces of writing you'll encounter on the Web. Rating: "Fresh".
