Trunk and Rear Suspension

Before starting

Before the start of work. Note rear ride height.

Out with the old

Start of trunk-pan replacement. Old trunk floor has been cut out.

Old vs. New

Old trunk floor (left) and new from Saab Club Sweden (right.) Replacement was intended for a 96, so I had to shorten it about 5 inches by cutting off one end. Would have been neater to section the middle, as Saab apparently did with the original (note seam.)

In with the new

AFter some shaping and pounding, the new trunk pan drops into place.

Bracing

I didn't want to weld so near the fuel tank (top of picture) so bolted down the front edge of the new trunk pan with heavy angle brace.

Scary rust I

Still LOTS more rust damage to fix! The whole area behind the right spring had been eaten away.

Scary rust II

Area above rear axle tube didn't look too good, either.

Not so scary

Fortunately, most of the damage was at the bottom where the side walls join the trunk; clean bright metal above once paint and undercoat had been stripped off.
