Biography
Adrian French was born and raised in the suburbs of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, He received a Bachelors in Fine Arts from Kutztown University, Kutztown, PA in 1998, and, his Masters of Fine Arts from San Diego State University, San Diego, CA in 2007. During the five years between graduating with his BFA and entering his Masters Program, Adrian completed a two year apprenticeship with furniture maker Jeff Lohr from 1998-2000, worked as an exhibition preparator for the Virginia Museum of Fine Art in Richmond Virginia from 2000-2001, and as an Art Handler and preparator for CU Museum at the University of Colorado, Boulder, CO 2001-2003. In 2007 he was a winter Resident Artist in the Wood program at Anderson Ranch Art Center. After graduating with his MFA Adrian moved to Berlin Germany where he worked with German playground designer and maker Tilman Stachat for 14 months. He returned to the U.S. in June of 2008 and is currently living in Columbus Ohio where he runs his own design and fabrication company, Wooden Fabrications which he subsidizes with part-time employment as an exhibition preparator and technician at both the Wexner Art Center and COSI (the Center of Science and Industry).
French has shown his work in several regional, national, and International exhibitions, including: Show Us Your Drawers the 2006 Furniture Society Juried Exhibition at Herron School of Art, Indianapolis, IN, 2006; Abiding Fortune: MFA Thesis Exhibition, Flor Y Canto Gallery, San Diego State University, San Diego, CA, 2006; Selections: By Wendy Maruyama at Zazou Home, San Diego, CA, 2006; UCSDSU. University of California at San Diego, San Diego, CA, 2005; Dialogues. Collaborative exhibition with Jessica Knapp, Flor Y Canto Gallery, San Diego State University, San Diego, CA, 2004; Objectifying. VCU School of Arts in Qatar, Doha, Qatar, 2003; and Functional Discourse: the works of six Contemporary Woodworkers, A.R. Mitchell Museum and Gallery, Trinidad, CO, 2003, an exhibition he also designed and curated.
