I think I was in college when I became fascinated by the phrase: "The map is not the territory". It seems to be an injunction to avoid confusion between concept and reality. As such, it provides an insight into where meaning resides. Most people would agree that an island has no meaning, but a map of the island does. That's not to say that the island has no information. The pattern of the shores, its shape, the height of its peaks or depths of its lakes are all information about the island. These are embodied in the island. Once a cartographer maps the island, measuring its attributes and distilling the information, meaning has been abstracted and a map can be constructed. |
