When choice overwhelms you, just give up and tell a story. Building mathematical models of complex systems is one of our most important technologies. While simulation software has become increasingly powerful, the quickest way to create detailed simulations is with our facility of imagination. That's right, woolgathering and daydreaming are advanced techniques in this highly technical field. Of course, as one visualizes potential futures, the critical facilities have to be engaged, exploring feasibility and poking around in the dark corners for contradictions and unintended consequences. After a while, however, the options can become overwhelming. Paralysis by analysis I've heard it called. One also needs to communicate the vision to others to influence their actions and get critical feedback. Telling stories is the codification of imagination. The themes of how todays choices lead to different futures must be extracted from imagination and told in a compelling way. |
