Knowledge about a system has to be expressed in order to be useful. Analytical theories that describe the world in deterministic mathematical formulas can be be very powerful. Some mathematical models explicitly account for random variation, while it is emergent in others. But where these can't be used, scenarios and stories provide an alternative. These all use different mental facilities: mathematics, analytical logic and intuition. |
