A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away...
It's amazing to me that thirty years ago I spent the whole summer in line at the Century 22 theater in San Jose. My friend Cyrus was, and still is, a sci-fi fan. He used to buy the special effects magazines and so he knew about Star Wars before it came out. I think we saw the movie at least ten times that summer. Just look at these kids: BTW- The original poster is kinda goofy. I preferred the old style poster that came out after the movie was released.

I have a new car	!
Like a couple of other friends and co-workers (Jolene and Karl), I have purchased a new car. After spending months lusting after the Toyota Prius, and doing weeks of research. I test drove one at Toyota of Santa Cruz on Friday, Feb. 23, but luckily my lovely wife had me come home instead of staying there. More research ensued. Much more. I trolled Prius Chat, PriusOnline, and other sites. I spoke to three other people who I know that already owned a Prius. I counted them as I passed through my daily commute. I studied Car Buying Tips and Edmonds and Yahoo Autos. I checked into buying a used one vs. a new one. I even did some chores around the house to build wife faction (Our living room has a fresh coat of paint and soon our laundry room cabinets will be installed.)I ended up buying a new 2007 Prius Touring Edition in Super White from Fremont Toyota. It is pretty much the loaded version. It has the navigation system and leather seats (real ones, not the "leather trimmed") ones. Kris Mang is the internet broker at the dealer and he was straight forward and helpful. Thanks to all involved, especially my lovely, and loving, wife Shawn. You're next baby! [Stock photo...

"Hello, is this Mr. Hoover? Devin's Dad?"

That's how the phone call started. My mind started racing as I knew that Devin was on his way home. Alone. Via the county bus.

"Yes, this is me."

"Um, Hi. Devin is ok, but he's been hit by a car."

This coming from a business very near our house. Devin had gotten off the bus and walked around the front of the bus to cross the street... and been surprised to see a red pickup coming at him. He's only got banged up knees and a few scrapes, but I'll bet he never does that again. The rest of the story revolves around how he got home from the bus stop.

Home is only about 90 seconds away in a car or about a 5-7 minute walk. The person on the phone asked me if they could give him a ride home. I said that would be very kind, but could I talk to Devin to make sure he was OK? Well, unfortunately, the phone wasn't portable and Devin was still outside being treated by an EMT who happened to be there (remember that we live in a rural community). OK. I asked him to call me back when Devin was available. After about 5 minutes I called back. Devin was available and he said that he would rather get a ride and that he didn't feel up to walking unless he had to. I said that it would be fine and hung up.

So I called his Mom. Shawn happened to be about 20 minutes away watching Rory's soccer practice. She answered her phone and I broke the news gently. Letting her know that Devin was only scraped up a bit and that he was getting a lift home. She was worried, but not too much.

Then, I got another call.

"Hello, Mr. Hoover? This is the EMT who has treated your son. Since he is a minor, we can't just let him go; I'm legally obligated to turn him over to his parents, a Doctor or other emergency personnel." Oh bummer! "We want to transport him to the hospital in town."

Egads! That's about 40 minutes away from home! I thanked the EMT and let him know that I didn't want him transported and that his mom was only about 20 minutes away and that I just spoke with her. So I hung up and called Shawn.

Ring, ring, ring, voicemail.

Ring, ring, ring, voicemail.

Ring, ring, ring, voicemail.

erg!

Called the EMT back an let him know that I couldn't reach her and that I'd be there in an hour. He said that a CHP officer had arrived and that the officer was willing to transport Devin home and stay with him until one of his parents arrived. Okey dokey. I also talked to the driver of the truck who assured me that he had exchanged information with Devin and was very happy that he seemed to be alright.

The truth is that the EMT had handed Devin over to a local volunteer Fire Department who had transferred him to the Paramedic from the ambulance that had arrived and then they, in turn, had transferred him to the CHP officer.

About half-way home, I finally got in touch with Shawn, who then raced off to pick up Devin.

Whew.

All is well. He doesn't seem to have any back/neck or head trauma and the scrapes will heal. His book bag has a broken strap and his glasses got mangled (lucky we have spares!)

Devin insisted on wearing the same pants to school today so that he could show off the damage.

Whew again!

Again.
I haven't posted nearly all summer, and now it's fall. It's been a hard and yet only somewhat eventful summer. I didn't take a real vacation until after school went back in session. Even that was a bit of a let down. Not that it wasn't fun and relaxing! Just not what we had originally planned....Mrs MacDude and I had decided that we were tired of going to vacation spots during vacation times. If we decided to do something, then 10,000 other people have the same idea. We went to LegoLand and the San Diego Zoo during Spring Break; so did thousands of other people. In the past we've also spent the Sunday after Thanksgiving *crawling* up I-5 with thousands of other families. Well, Mrs. MacDude and I decided after that trip that we were going to pull one over on the throngs of tourists that follow us around. We were not going to take a summer vacation!Instead, the plan was to wait until mid-September when the tourists were back in school and back at work. Then, take the kids out of school for a week and find someplace warm near water to sit down.A plan was hatched. We would go down to Mexico. Cabo san Lucas, Yucatan. someplace with warmth and sand and water. (Cruises are out, Mrs. MacDude doesn't want to be trapped on a boat.)Then a few weeks later, I decided to surprise her, and the boys, and make it even better. You see, our wedding anniversary is in July. And it just so happens that this year would be our tenth anniversary. We still reminisce about the wonderful honeymoon we had in Maui. We had stayed in a timeshare condo on the Kaanapali shore. It was wonderful, relaxing and we've talked about taking the boys back there on and off for years. what if I surprised her and instead of booking a week in Mexico, I booked a week back in Kaanapali? Yay!Then I investigated it. I used my formidable search skill to scour the internet. I found the same condos, I found the ones next door. I consulted with travel agents. Six Thousand dollars? Just for airfare, a two room suite and a car? Yike!So instead of surprising her, I figured that I couldn't spend that kind of money unilaterally. I took my findings to her. She said that it was very sweet, but she agreed that it was too expensive. So we shelved it. Not like "Dump" and forget, but I tried to find a couple of other ways to cut it down and then slowly gave up. Unfortunately, we didn't make Mexico plans either. So, at the last minute (okay, planned 10 or so days before) we rented a car and drove down to Carlsbad and spent a week. 8 hours of driving there, six days of sitting by a pool or playing on the beach and eating out. 8 hours of driving back. No LegoLand, No SeaWorld, No Zoo. Nothing but relaxing. It was nice. But it wasn't Kaanapali.
