Earthquakes and touchdowns

First off, let me say that the recent earthquake in Pakistan is a horrible thing. My cousin Dani's husband's mother was in Pakistan (she lives there) and was performing surgery at the time of the earthquake. She and her two patients are fine. Please think good thoughts for all those involved in all the natural disasters.

Second is a bit of news about Dani's niece (my first cousin once removed), Miranda McOsker:

Bishop Montgomery wasn't trying to rub it in against Ribet Academy on Friday night.

With a 28-0 lead at halftime, the Bishop Montgomery coaches sent in several junior varsity players to gain some experience.

But it was the sophomore quarterback who stole the show, as she threw for three touchdown passes.

That's right, she.

Miranda McOsker, who also plays on the girls junior varsity basketball team, came into the game for the Knights and went 3-for-5 for the three scores and 175 yards as Bishop Montgomery cruised to a 55-14 victory at Ribet Academy.

"I've been playing football and baseball and other sports with the boys since I was little and I never had a problem with it," McOsker said. "I started playing for Bishop Montgomery because I heard it was a great program."

McOsker played the entire second half, which came as a surprise to her.

"I just thought I was going to play in the second quarter," McOsker said. "I didn't know I was going to play that much."

She started things off in the third quarter with a 65-yard touchdown strike to Leland Jones.

McOsker's second touchdown came in the fourth quarter. McOsker drew coverage by looking at her primary receiver, then threw to secondary receiver Matthew Perez for a 35-yard touchdown.

She capped things off with a 25-yard scoring pass to Ashton Pittman.

The 5-foot-9, 145-pound McOsker played shooting guard last season and said she hopes to move up to varsity this year.

As for football, McOsker is not sure at what level she'll be playing next year. She doesn't see herself starting for the varsity team as current starting quarterback Alex Stellato is only a junior.

"There's opportunity there," Bishop Montgomery coach Arnold Ale said of the possibility of McOsker starting. "If she wants to play and she's the best quarterback she can play."

McOsker said she will probably continue to play whether its on the varsity team or J.V.

"I'll still be playing if it's fun for me," she said, "even if I'm not playing well."

Three weeks ago, McOsker played two downs in Bishop Montgomery's 47-13 win against Animo. She was sacked both times.

Playing sports with boys is not a new experience for McOsker. From the fifth though eighth grades she was one of two girls on the Holy Trinity Middle School flag football team in San Pedro.

In the first half, Stellato was 7-for-11 for 125 yards, two touchdowns and no interceptions. Running back Ivan Edwards scored two touchdowns, one on a run and one on a reception.
Go Miranda!
