Tooth Fairy blues

How long did the magic last? Warning! May not be suitable for young children!!!

My eleven year-old son, Devin, cornered me the other morning. He had recently lost a molar and had left it under his pillow with a note for the Tooth Fairy to bring him an amulet. He had previously received Gold dollar coins in exchange for his teeth, except once when I didn't have one and gave him a small necklace that I had. Recently he had start writing notes, asking if he could keep the teeth. It was all very cute and sincere.

Then, the other night he went to bed with a molar under his pillow and a note about wanting a magic amulet. Well, I had been out that night and had run several errands. I went to Targét to return a couple of Bioicles that Grandma Kate had gotten for the boys (they already had those and they wanted newer ones), replace the sandals that Rory broke after one day of wearing them (replaced for free), and Shawn had warned me that Devin had lost a tooth and wanted a necklace. Shawn sent me out to a little Bead store that she had found near my work. Only thing is that she gave me vague directions ("It's near Joanne's") and it had moved. Luckily I had an idea of where it had moved. So, I got him a decent pendant with a teardrop shaped tigereye and a piece of cording. I get home and everything goes well. The kids go to bed, Shawn & I stay up and read or watch TV or something. Then, before I go to sleep I sneak in and replace the tooth and the note with the amulet. So far, so good.

The next morning I get up and get ready for the day. I go in to wake Devin up and he's sitting in bed with a scowl on his face. I ask him what's up and without a word he reaches behind him and silently pull up the amulet. Playing innocent, I shrug and ask him what it was. He responds with "I know that you put this here. You were out at Target and your drawer with gold dollars is running out." Damn, I've been set up and found out.

So, I sit down and talk about the tooth fairy with him. He's upset, but I try to explain that it brought him a lot of joy over the last 5-6 years that he has been losing teeth. I also told him that now that he's in on it, he can be a tooth fairy assistant for his little brother. I also gave him a warning not to tell young Mr. Rory about his discovery.

I'm not looking forward to Easter and Christmas this year.
