• Caption: A very old view of the CH&D terminal area, looking southeast. 6th Street actually runs along the back of these buildings, but it can barely be differentiated from the dirt ground. The long-lived passenger station at the corner of 5th and Baymiller can be seen at the top center, with the small cupola poking up behind other rooflines, opened in 1863. The original station from 1851, by this time relgated to freight duty, is probably the large building on the right, and a newer freight station, built about the same time as the 1863 passenger station, is to the left of it. The building with the steep gable at the left is probably the original platform structure for the passenger station, which was later replaced with simpler wooden sheds and platforms, as seen in the next photo. When the C&O line from Kentucky was built in 1888, its tracks squeezed between the passenger freight stations, but that doesn't appear to be in place here yet. That would date this picture to between 1863 and 1888.
