Remodelling - Week 3 - a step forward and a step back

The roof is done. The chimney is repaired. The finish carpenter has done his work. We have painted the ceiling and walls. It was coming to a close when...

Things have moved along nicely on the remodel. The roofer is done and he has done a very good job - Rose Roofing out of Stoughton, WI (for you readers who aren't from Wisconsin, you pronounce it Stow'un). Tim Aurey, our carpenter, was watching Steve McElmurry and his crew (the roofers) and he said, "I've put on roofs and I've been a carpenter for 30 years and he is doing the best job I've ever seen". Good to hear.

Ena and I painted like crazy last week (actually, Jim painted most of it - Ena's addition). Kilz stain blocker over the past owners hand lettered quotation on the wall, "Unconditional Love is the Path To True Happiness". We had a mirror hanging over it. I then cut in and painted two coats on the ceiling and the walls. Two different wall colors were used. We have oak trim which I masked off. Anyway, to make a long story a little shorter - I'm finicky on this stuff. We had finished that and were looking at the home stretch.

Then.... Last night I was doing some touch-up work up in the skylights - touching up the wood trim. I was coming down of the step ladder when the ladder wobbled and shot out from under me. I landed on my butt-elbow and back - knocking the wind out me and bruising me up but not breaking anything. The quart of varnish (pecan colored) flew from the top of the ladder and sprayed everywhere.

The ceiling now looks like we filmed The Texas Chain Saw Massacre (Part 132) in our living room.

Paint sprayed both the wall above the fireplace and the behind the fish tank.

Ena ran around mopping up varnish like crazy as I slowly drug myself up off the floor. We grabbed every rag we could get our hands on and started mopping, scrubbing and wiping up. Sigh....

It looks like I'll have to get some more Kilz and repaint the ceiling and the walls around the fish tank and the fireplace. Not too bad considering. But I did think that I was done with painting.

On the bright side, Tim installed the blinds into the skylights and all the trim. The skylights are wonderful. I love the sound of rain on the glass and the sound of Fall leaves ticking along the tops. Beautiful beautiful beautiful.

and the fishes are fine...
