The remodeling Diary - Day 1 & 2

Today was the first day of the remodel. The
roofers arrived at 7:30, the carpenter rolled in at 10. This is the third house
that we (Ena and I) have remodeled. I pulled out the drop clothes, the
carpenter started tearing out drywall and cutting up pine and the smell of
remodeling came rushing over me.
I've posted the day in pictures on my .Mac account.
You can see them here .
We had a nice surprise on Day 1. Under the half walls between the dining room and the living room, there is oak hardwood flooring. Yippee! That's a $1000 saved and a lot of patch and matching work. Usually, remodeling surprises go the other direction - guess what we found, it will cost another $1000 to fix it.
I'm very glad that I have my computer on a UPS. Every time a worker starts up a power tool, I hear my UPS click in to pick up the voltage drop. Thank you APC!
Day 1: The night - didn't get a lot of sleep last night. There were new strange sounds of tarps on the roof blowing around. About 3:15 AM, I heard this tzick... tzick... tzick..tzick.tzickickcictztzttzttztztztztztztzwing.... kalinkackinkink. Something blew off in the middle of the night. A bit of exploring for the morning.
Spent most the night between 3:15AM and 6:00 thinking about the lighting in the dining room. We are putting a skylight right above the table. It is wide enough that if we mounted pendant lights on either side, the pendants would hang right over some poor guest's head. We have 8 foot ceilings so the pendants would either be very short or you would walk into them. I came up with three ideas. I'll bounce them off Ena in the morning.
Day 2: Roofers are here at 7:15AM. I just got to sleep. Ena and I are off to look at lighting this morning. We found a chandelier that we like. Now the trick will be finding a way to suspend it over the dining room table (in the middle of the skylight).
Tim is cutting in the second skylight. Today we should see new light in the dining room and living room.
Let's see what tomorrow brings.
