Art Fair on the Square 2003 - beautiful day out.

Saturday we went to the annual Art
Fair on the Square - a big juried art show with 500 exhibitors, food,
four stages and great fun. The Art Fair off
the Square is in the same location at the same time. There were 145
Wisconsin artist at this show. All in all, we spent the day perusing 600 or so
artists works.
It was a beautiful day - perfect even. The fair
is held on capitol square. It surrounds the capitol on all four sides. You
wander along the booths under the grand old trees. We spent most of the day
wandering around looking at art, eating, laying on the grass and people watching
and enjoying perfect weather. I wish I had pulled out my digital camera to take
pictures of the fair and the day. How many times have I come home from an
outing and thought, "I wish I took more pictures." Oh
well.
We saw a lot of great art. There was a painting by Alla Tsank that we really liked. Her paintings are a mix of medieval and modern illustration. The picture below shows her style but isn't the one we wanted. She had a painting of a man and woman. He was holding a dandelion which glowed softly. It was called "The Proposal".
There were two very entertaining sculptors at the fair that we saw. Michael & Shelley Buonaiuto did these wonderful figures of people laughing and chatting . The best part were these sets of "windows" that were hanging in pairs.
The other artist, Judith Whipple , did these very whimsical and colorful birds that were great fun. There were all sizes of birds. Some stood on three foot tall stripped legs. There was a ladder that had six or seven birds - one with an egg. Very fun. We would have liked to bring some of these home too.
Finally. There was another artist who did shadow boxes / mixed media / art prints that looked like old lithographs of French toys gone surreal. His name is Jay Long . A picture of one of his shadow boxes is shown below.
There were many many other great artist at the show. These are just a few that really struck us. I can hardly wait for next year. This time I will take my camera and I will write down booth numbers and names. (Note to self: Read this before you go next year).

As an aside. I think the Art Fair on the Square web site could use some work. It is very difficult to figure out which artist stuff you saw. The web site for the Omaha Summer Arts Festival has thumbnails for each artist so you can see the style of their work. Sally's Art Show Artists web site has pictures of the artists with a sample piece. I'll have to talk with that Madison City Art Council about this.
