YIKES! Tornados!!

We were coming back from dinner last night when I heard the tornado sirens go off. As good citizens, we headed home and turned on the TV to the local channel. Suddenly, the local station sounded worried then the station went out. We headed to the basement.

The local station is about a half mile away. They have a Doppler radar system that we can see from our upstairs windows. Whenever there is a tornado warning, we turn on the TV and watch this station. You can watch the Doppler radar sweep over the county. Last night, they were talking about the storm and showing "roof cam" shots of the storm. The sky had turned to an ochre-yellow. The storm was moving very fast - 55 miles per hour. We sat on the couch listening to the news and looking out the back window. We had a strange moment when it was pouring down rain on the street next to our house but not in our yard.

Suddenly, the meterologist announces, "folks we have spotted a tornado right next to our station. It just touched down outside and is moving ktschchchchchchchhchc." The screen went blue. Then our power failed. Ena and I looked at each other and said, "to the basement." We headed downstairs and the power came back. We turned on the TV in the basement and surfed for news. The power went out again. Then came back. We found a station that was announcing that a tornado had been spotted south of us about 1/2 a mile. The station is North. Then the local came back and announced that they had all evacuated to their basement and that there had been a tornado spotted across the street. North of us by a 1/2 a mile. YIKES!

We stayed in the basement until 9:15 PM when the storm had moved by. There was news of downed power lines on both sides of us. Wind damage on Mineral Point road. Another tornado East of us a couple of miles. This morning, 2500 people near us are without power. YIKES!!

Madison usually reports one tornado touching down every three years. Last year we had a tornado touch down south-west of use by 20 miles then north east of us by 20 miles. YIKES! we thought then. This year it was either side by a half a mile. I hate to see what next year will bring. YIKES!!!!
