Sprint and the LG PM-325

A while back I wrote that I want a new cell phone with bluetooth . Sprint has launched the LG PM-325 (Engadget Story about the LG PM-325). This is a slider style phone with bluetooth, a camera, nice bright color screen and lots of goodies. But (isn't there always a but in these stories), BUT - Sprint put half-assed bluetooth on the phone.

They didn't include the OBEX profile for the phone. OBEX is what lets things like your computer discover the phone and then transfer data to and from the phone. OBEX is what makes iSync work. To quote from the Engadget Forums:

I've got the PM-325... like the phone (it feels great in your hand, good signal strength, the slide closed features protects the phone) BUT for now OBEX is not implemented so the MACINTOSH CAN NOT SYNC with this phone NOR CAN A PC... what a dumb implementation of bluetooth for a tech company... SPRINT

On Sprintuser.com there is a post (I looked but could not find it again) from an LG Representative basically saying, "we design to the specifications that Sprint gives us. They didn't ask for the OBEX profile to be included so we don't include it".

It seems to me and others that the reason for Sprint not including the OBEX profile is simple. If I had the OBEX profile, I could sync my address book from my phone to my computer. Sprint sells the Business Connection Personal Edition ($10 a month) that will let me access my Outlook or Notes directory on the phone. I could also transfer pictures off the phone to my computer. Sprint sells the Picture Pack for that lets me "take, upload and send pictures" ($15 a month). I could also download ring-tones to my phone. You have to buy the Vision Pack to download ring-tones. If Sprint includes the OBEX profile, they loose $25 a month in extra charges. Turn that around the other way - I have to pay Sprint an additional $300 a year to make up for their half-assed bluetooth implementation.

(Sorry about the excessive use of red text but I'm pissed) Is it just me or are Cell Phone Carries the New SCUM OF THE EARTH GROUP.

I hope that Verizon gets their butts kicked in court over their half-assed bluetooth implementation. I'm telling ya all now, the first nationwide carrier that implements bluetooth right - I'm moving my cell service to them.

There. I feel a little better.
