Aorto bifemoral bypass

When I left the hospital this afternoon Eddie was in the recovery room and Jo-Ann was napping on a couch in the waiting area. Neither of them got much sleep last night. Apparently the five and an half hour surgery went well and the circulation in Eddie's legs has returned to normal.

We had thought this operation was going to happen a year ago but the doctors and Eddie all preferred to wait and see if he could get by without it, even though he found it hard to walk more than a few steps at a time. Then last month, for a couple of days, his legs went numb and blue. The blockages in his abdominal aorta and femoral arteries were approaching 100 per cent.

Although pleased with his work, the surgeon warned if Eddie doesn't quit smoking he'll soon be back for an amputation, or worse. My sister looked at him and promised that she and Eddie had both had their last cigarettes the night before. The surgeon shrugged. He's heard that before.
