Determined determination

A few weeks ago I found myself in the company of several friends, autoworkers past and present, toasting three politicians, Bush, Harper and Ontario premier Dalton McGinty. I was probably the only one present who had ever said a kind word about the American president, and there was only one other who had ever even contemplated voting for the Canadian prime minister. But we were all tremendously relieved to see the efforts of those three guys to keep the auto industry, and our jobs and pensions, from going under.

Tomorrow the new man of hope takes over as the most powerful leader in the world, and I will be raising a glass or two in his honour as well, wishing him the very best of luck.

Seven years ago I couldn't name a single major politician who had my respect. Now I'm willing to give most of them, at least the un-indicted ones, the benefit of a doubt, even though I'm still critical of their ideologies and parties.

Here in Canada the member of parliament who carries my hopes is Michael Ignatieff . May he turn out to be our Obama.
