Day 7: Seligman to Flagstaff -- 78 miles

Today is when the "options" of this trip really kicked in -- lots of chances to ride old alignments of the highway. Fascinating but fatiguing -- especially as we've climbed up to more than 7,000 feet.

Riding old alignments often requires climbing over fences as we move to and from the interstate. Here Lon helps a rider over some barbed wire.

First town we reached today, Ash Fork, is the "Flagstone Capital of America." Now you know.

Lon updates the route card. We had sunny skies all morning, but it clouded over later in the day.

Hiking back to the interstate.

More fences.

Believe it or not, this is the infamous Devil Dog Road. An actual devil dog appeared shortly afterward to chase us.

"Uh, I think Flagstaff is somewhere near that mountain..." (San Francisco Peak)

Route 66 may not be dead, but a lot of what used to be on it is. This valley used to be a bustling tourist center.
