Park suffers letdown
The Park girls' basketball team continued to ride the Southeast Conference
roller coaster Friday night.
On Tuesday, the Panthers hit the highest heights by beating state-ranked
Franklin. But on Friday night, they plunged downward. They missed too
many free throws, had too many turnovers and lost to crosstown rival
Horlick 42-39 at the Park Fieldhouse.
It was the first time Horlick had beat Park since 1993 -- a span of
28 straight games, including postseason contests -- Park coach Jim Betker
said.
"In the SEC, you have to come ready to play each and every night,
especially in these crosstown games," Betker said. "We didn't
have that instinct tonight. Horlick came out pumped up."
The Rebels (7-4, 6-3 SEC) used that emotion to get a 26-22 lead at halftime,
but watched it dwindle away in the third quarter. The Panthers (5-6,
4-5 SEC) outscored them 11-2 and took a 33-28 lead into the fourth period.
That's when Park fell apart. The Panthers threw the ball away on their
first three possessions in the last quarter.
"That kind of set the path for the rest of the game," Betker
said. "We let Horlick get right back in it."
The game was tied 39-39 with about 12 seconds left when Horlick's Barb
Ferch made a 3-pointer to give the Rebels the lead for good. She and
Tasha Smith each scored 10 points, while Heather Vanoss added eight.
For Park, Jessica Sanchez scored a game-high 13 points and Nina Marcsis
added 11.
"We threw the ball away too many times. We didn't make enough free
throws," Betker said. "We just didn't have the right intensity." The Panthers made only 8 of 19 free throws, while Horlick made 8-of-15. |
