English 1A Study Notes
For Monday's readings, we take the first
step toward writing your first essay for this course.
As you read the chapter, identify the
important characteristics of a "Remembered Event" essay
and work to understand how each of the sample essay demonstrates
different elements of these characteristics. This will require you
to take many of the techniques we have discussed from Chapters 14
and 15 and place them in the context of a particular type of writing.
How, in other words, do the techniques of narration and description
contribute to a "Remembered Event" essay that meets the
following criteria (summarized on 48-49): 1) a well-told story,
2) a vivid presentation of places and people, and 3) an indication
of the event's significance.
Come to class albe to define and explain
the different techniques described in the chapter and prepared to
evaluate each sample essay's use of those techniques. Read the essays
closely enough that you remember their titles and authors and can
discuss why the text presents them as examples of this type of essay..
