Shopping in and near Laroque

Village shops include two bakers, a butcher, small general store, greengrocer, newsagent, post office, pharmacy, and two hairdressers, all within easy walking distance. In summer, the village shops (except the post office) open 7 days a week, but at other times of year almost all are closed on Mondays. Most shops close for several hours at midday, and all are closed on Sunday afternoon and evening. There is a cash dispenser (ATM) at the post office.

A large Champion supermarket is located 3km north of the village. In summer, this is open all day Monday to Saturday, and from 09:00 to 13:00 on Sunday. At other times of year, it closes for lunch and is closed on Sundays.

Every Wednesday morning there is a market in a car park behind the group of shops on the north side of the main street; stalls sell fresh fruit and vegetables, cheeses, etc. A fish van stops near these shops for a couple of hours on Tuesday and Friday mornings, providing both great fish (mostly from Port Vendres) and great entertainment. Try frying up a combination of seiche (cuttlefish), rouget (red mullet), lotte (monkfish), calmar (squid), and langoustine.

Le Perthus (about 15km), a village on the French side of the Spanish border on the N11 highway, is cheaper than most of France for beers, wines, spirits and almost anything else you care to think of. Some of the supermarkets are open 24 hours, and unlike anywhere else nearby, everything is open all day on Sunday. The Spanish border town of La Jonquera, a couple of km beyond Le Perthus, is a good place to fill up with petrol or diesel - considerably cheaper than in France. It also has several 24 hour supermarkets.

Smart clothes, crafts and souvenirs can be found in the nearby towns of Argelès-ville, Collioure and Banyuls-sur-Mer.

Perpignan (about 25km) is a cosmopolitan city with extensive shopping opportunities. Central Perpignan has a huge variety of chic shops of all sorts, while several large shopping centres are dotted around the periphery.
