Stacked Rubble Wall

A free standing stacked rubble wall takes shape. 12,000+ lb. of broken concrete is hand-stacked and the core filled with crushed rock for stability.

1. Gathering raw materials, free but for gas
2. Using batter boards and string to layout the wall
3. Almost looks professional. Checking level of concrete chunks as it goes
4. Verifying everything is straight and true
5. Tools of the trade: level, chisel, sledge, mini sledge . . .
6. Setting the corner chunks and infilling with rubble
7. First layer done, half the second layer started, filling with crushed rock
8. Switched to crushed rock as the filler, it packs very firm
9. Different shot of the outer wall, trying to plant trees at the same time
10. Overview
11. The wall turns on a 100+ degree corner and sweeps out toward the street
12. Foundations and first few layers set down
13. With a few layers down I paused to start planting the garden
14. The short segment near the house rises up
15. Half the layers in with some initial planting
16. The use of crushed rock as filler creates a flat surface for the next layer
17. Path cutting through the wall
18. Adding more height to the wall
19. The wall at its maximum height on the right
20. The garden filling in
21. Finally, the wall is finished and the garden continues to fill in
22. A year later I spent the last 2 hours adding the top course near the house
23. Finished wall with a maturing garden growing inside
