Food: Too Much Variety?


Food, Too Much Variety?
Growing up in the West, we often live in cities with very diverse populations. People from many different countries with very differnet cultures. In fact, this is what we Americans asy is great about our country, although we no longer have the exclusive claims to this. With such variety in people, we also get the benefit of all of their foods. I could go out to eat every night for a month in San Diego and never eat the same kind of food twice. Mexican, Guatemalan, Argentinian, Brazinian, Chinese (Hong Kong style, Cantonese style), Mongolian B-B-Q, Korean B-B-Q, Japanese (sushi or tempura style), Italian (northern or sicilian styles), Greek, Middle Eastern, Turkish, Lebanese, Jewish Deli, French, English Pubs, American Food, Thai, Vietnemese, Indian, Pakistani, Laotian, Russian, Cajun, Creole,Southern style, and so on for a seamingly endless amount of time. This is just the list that I came up with quickly, without usually thinking about it. Then there are all the veggies and vegans and all their restauraunts. It is truely mind boggling, especially when I see it written out like that. So growing up with this selection, we get so used to it, take it for grated, really.
So many foreigners come here, to Korea and like the food at first, but within a month, it all seems the smae and they quickly grow tired of it. It is hard for us to understand how people can eat and enjoy the same food all the time. But its not really our fault, its our heterogenious food backgrounds. I think that someone from another homeogeneuos culture would probably think nothing of it. They would just enjoy it. Whereas, I have had to put all thought of all the other foods in the world completely out of my mind, in order to truely appreciate Korean food, which I now can say that I do. Otherwise I would and did drive myself crazy with cravings.
So variety in ones food, not just the food, is yet another cultural difference that I have struggled with. But soon. . . oh. . . so. . . .soon, I will have all the beutiful foods I can handle at home and in Bangkok.
