September 30th, 2002 Flight to New Zealand

1st Step Forward,

I had a great send off and Jessica put together a fantastic going away party. I had the chance to say farewell to Azeem, Simon, Shannon, Candice and a whole lot of other friends new and old. I wished a bitter sweet good-bye to Jess and caught my morning ride with Dupes. After a short car trip to LAX replete with thick brown smog and white knuckle traffic I arrived in Auckland safe and sound.

The long transpacific flight, like most torturously drawn out experiences(e.g. SAT exam, music recital, stomach surgery), sucked in every conceivable way.  A deodorant deficient man was seated to my right. Another slightly less smelly man with stinky feet sat behind me and I believe his brother was in front. I was blessed with not 1 but 2 lovely children to my left.  Bundles of sunshine in Satans eyes to be sure. I did manage to beguile the check in lady into issuing me an aisle seat(it's the little pleasure you really have to hold onto) so it wasn't a complete right off.

For those of you who have endured a transoceanic flight this is probably just me bitching.  However, for those of you who have not shared the a fore mentioned pleasure simply lock yourself in a closet at home with all your used gym socks and underwear if possible and set the clock for 12 hours and you too can enjoy a transoceanic flight:)

I haven't been here long enough to tell you anything exciting but I did manage to arrive in the a.m. so I was able to meander about the town a little.  Weather is crap, blah, blah, blah and it will probably rain on me the entire time.
Adios from across the globe,
The Tomas
