Xin Jiang Bread

Its good to finally be back in Shanghai so I can spend my precious time huddled around the Xin Jiang Bread vendors oil drum oven waiting for some fresh flat bread. Xin Jiang is the very western province in China that has alot of Arabic influence. You probably would not recognize people from this region as being Chinese at all. At 0.5 RMB each, this has to be some of the cheapest eats in town. If you order, be prepared to answer the all important question "tian de haishu xian de" which is "sweet or salty". I definitely like the salty best.

There are many places to get this bread around town, but we prefer this vendor who is over in what we call "Yebbie Square." Its over where our old apartment was. When we first moved to Shanghai Vicky's grandmother and grandfather (nai-nai and yebbie) lived with us for about a month. This side street is where the Yebster was always finding new treats. So that's why we call it "Yebbie Square".

We eat these plain or will heat them up at home and eat them with hummus. They also make a pretty nice dough for making Vegetable Pizza on. But that's a whole 'nother entry altogher.
