A Ghost is Born - Wilco

One of my favorite bands is the now defunct Geraldine Fibbers. I got to see them twice before they collapsed. Their stage set up was one half for drummer, fiddler, guitar/lead vocalist, stand up base, and the other half was for guitarist Nels Cline. This was not only for all the pedals and stuff that you see underneath guitar players, and the little table for the spatulas, wiskers, drumsticks, and other implements that he would hit his strings with, but because the guy couldnt stand still, he would move all over the place and he is over six feet tall. These things do not make a great guitarist, but Nels Cline is a great guitarist and he presided all over the Geraldine Fibbers; his use of space was justified. Nels Cline now plays with Wilco, who recently put out this record called A Ghost is Born. Sometimes the rock gods say, hey this ones for you guys and right now I like to go to church by listening to a Ghost is Born.
In Nels Cline Wilco now has a guitar stud, something that they have never had. Theyve had song-writing stud, but now they have a master at the instrument that defines rock and roll. He doesnt take the band over, but has been able to insert himself into the blend that the whole world hopefully learned about in Yankee Hotel Foxtrot, Wilcos previous record. He is a nice replacement to Jay Bennett who is no longer involved with Wilco, if you saw I Am Trying To Break Your Heart, you can make your own conclusions about that decision.
Now I warn you that this is one of those records that takes a couple of listens before you are playing it non stop and humming it when you are away from music playing apparatus, but it is a bone grabber. Didnt this band used to be alt-country? Does anyone remember that?
