Until TA 16?? the Shire was a southern region of Arnor, then Arthedain. In that year King Ar? granted the depopulated area to the people of Marcho and Blanco, two leaders among the haflings or hobbits. The halflings had previously lived principally in the Angle and parts of Cardolan, but in more recent times had been forced to migrate to Breeland, wheretherewas severe overcrowding. In the years following its settlement, the Shire evolved into a well settled land almost totally dominated by the halflings. They survived the fall of Arthedain in TA1974, establishing their own Thain and Mayor to provide what little 'government' they required. TheShire encompassed X square miles (Y acres) west of the Baranduin River and east of the Tower Hills. Its key settlements were Hobbiton, Michel Delving, Tookborough, the Marish, and later Buckland (which actually lay east of the Baranduin, next to the Old Forest). |
