Literally, "Stone-Land", the southern Realm in Exile of the Dunedain, originally the Dual-Kingdom of Isildur and Anarion. Gondor survived over two Ages of trials and tribulations, standing as the great bulwark of the men of Westerness against the forces of the Dark Lord right up until the War of Ring. Beginning as colonies of the Numenorians in the Second Age, Gondor was official founded following the Akallabeth, and the arrival of the sons of Elendil. Its key cities were Pelagir, an ancient Numenorian colony and sea-port near the mouth of the Anduin; Osgiliath, city of the stars, lying on both sides of the Anduin between the White Mountains and Mordor; Minas Anor, a citadel which grew into a city, located on the far eastern end of the White Mountains; and Minas Ithil, established by Isildur close to the borders of Mordor. Other important towns were Linhir and Dol Amroth, on the south coast. |
