Arthedain, principal realm of the northern Dúnedain from TA 861 to TA 1975, was ruled by the direct decendants of Elendil and Isildur.

Arthedain extended over the north and west of Eriador, and was centred around Nenuial (Twilight Lake), the Emyn Uíal (the Twilight Hills) and the Tyrn Formen (the North Downs).

The chief city of Arthedain and the seat of its Kings was Fornost Erain. Annúminas, the titular capital of Arnor, remains an important centre until its destruction in TA 1409.

Breeland and the Shire were important southern regions of Arthedain which survived its fall in TA 1975.

Arthadan
Population

An estimation of the population of Arnor and its successor realms, based upon the methodology used by Thomas Morwinsky (see Demography & Economics), but assuming lower population densities.

Arnor Population.pdf

Arnor Population.xls

This revised assumption is based upon the view that Arnor had a relatively low density population, except for parts of Cardolan at its height.

Annúminas

Royal capital of the Realms in Exile and of Arnor. Renown for its libraries, wide streets and views over the Nenuial and towards the Emyn Uíal.

Fornost Erain

Fortress capital of Arthedain, sited in the North Downs with a commanding view over the northern Baranduin valley and the Nenuial.

Emyn Uíal

The Twilight Hills, the picturesque lands of northwestern Arthedain, and the original area settled by the Faithful in the dying years of the Second Age.

Amon Sûl

The great eastern fortress of Arnor & Arthedain, site of one of the palantír. Destroyed in TA 1409 by Angmarean forces.

Bree

Central and ancient settlement of Breeland. From around TA 1300 onwards Breeland evolves into a unique culture where hobbits and men live side by side. Bree survives the fall of Arthedain in TA 1975, to become one of the main settled areas surviving in Eriador by the end of the Third Age.

The Shire

Southern region of Arthedain, granted to the hobbit-folk in TA 1601. The Shire remains a viable entity right through to the end of the Third Age and into the Fourth.

Map

An outline map of the realm of Arthedain. Each square is 50 miles wide (2,500 sq miles).
