First graders learned about the signs and symbols Aboriginese artists use in their paintings. After that, they learned about the migration and nesting rituals of sea turtles and created a sea turtle sculpture out of paper mache. Then they used Aboriginal symbols to tell an exciting story about their sea turtle in a dot painting.
Kindergarten artists were able to use their mixing and measuring skills as we made our own clay out of flour, water and salt. Then, they used simple shapes to create a releif sculpture of an animal out of their clay. The next week, they painted a habitat for their animal to live in.
Students learned about the Art Nouveau style and how Art Nouveau artists and designers like Gustav Klimt took ideas for their lines and patterns from nature. These mixed media collage works use curvy lines and sections of pattern resembling Klimt's famous painting called The Kiss.
First Graders learned about life in the desert and looked at paintings by Mexican artist Carmen Lomas Garza. We read the story, Cactus Hotel and talked about the plants and animals found in the deserts of the South West. Students used BIG brushes to paint their desert skies, MEDIUM brushes to paint their cactus, with sunlight hitting them, and SMALL brushes to apply the prickles.
For this lesson we learned about the artist Wayne Theibaud, and looked at some of his famous paintings of cakes from the 1960's. Students learned to draw using an ellipse for the top of their cake. They also used tints and shades to paint their cakes. This lesson made us all very hungry!
Continuing their expolration of shapes, Kindergarten students looked at Paul Klee's work and created a stamped painting using sponges and found objects. Paying close attention to the negative space, they colored in their negative shapes with pastel.
Third Graders made abstract 3-D paintings about their favorite sport or activity in the style of artist, Frank Stella.
The third grade learned to make a collograh print by making a collage with recycled materials and printing that image multiple times.
First Graders discovered how to create multiple fish prints of their own design from a styrofoam printing plate.
