Frank Stella, Jarama II
We began this lesson with a game of charades. Students used movements instead of words to communicate the action written on the piece of paper to their class mates. Then, we looked at the work of Frank Stella. Especially his 3 dimensional abstract paintings based on car racing, like the one above.
For their own abstract relief paintings, each student chose a sport or action. Then, we cut shapes out of cardboard that expressed the feeling of the movements involved in that sport. Students used, geometric shapes, organic shapes and lots of negative space. After painting each piece, the pieces were assembled into a composition. Students will give it a title and write a short paragraph explaining their art piece, but you will have to try to guess what it is first! Check the gallery page in the coming weeks for the finished pieces.
